The Current State of the Philippine Air

Climate and Atmosphere

The Climate of the Philippines is either tropical rainforesttropical savanna or tropical monsoon, or humid subtropical (in higher-altitude areas) characterized by relatively high temperature, oppressive humidity and plenty of rainfall. There are two seasons in the country, the wet season and the dry season, based upon the amount of rainfall.

Weather in the Philippines is monitored and managed by the government agency known locally as PAGASA or the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Temperature

The average year round temperature in the Philippines is 26.6 degrees Celsius. The cool weather normally occurs from December to February, while the warm weather occurs during the months of March to June

Climate Types

The climate types in the Philippines are based on the distribution
rainfall in a certain area. Currently, the Philippines has four
types of climates.

a. Type I - Two pronounced season: dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.
b. Type II - No dry season with a pronounced rainfall from November to January.
c. Type III - Seasons are not very pronounced, relatively dry from November to April, and wet during the rest of the year.
d. Type IV - Rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year.

Air Quality

Despite the efforts of the government to improve the quality of the air we breathe, air pollution is still a serious threat to the environment and to millions of its citizens. Metro Manila is considered one of the urban areas that is highly exposed  to the air pollution called soot, which consists of complex and varying mixtures of particles suspended in the air.

Automobiles are the main culprit in the widespread of the pollution in the country. The use of diesel fuels in automobiles emits toxic substance content such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, sulfur and benzene, all of these are toxic air contaminants associated with lung cancer.

  1. As computer science majors, in what way can we best contribute to the improvement of the Philippines' air system?

  2. Knowing this stuff as citizens, what can we do to lessen air pollution to our country? what little things can we do to lessen this pollution?

Lev, maybe we can program a software that checks pollution emission in our houses or other places to know how much pollution we produce.

  3. I believe that the laws regarding the air quality management in the Philippines should be further reinforced and strictly implemented. The effects of the current law has only produced little impact upon the improvement of our environment. Air pollution is still rampant in our country.

  4. I agree that one of the main reasons of air pollution here in the Philippines is because of the smoke that the automobiles produce. The government should pay attention to those PUVs that do not follow rules regarding smoke belching.

  5. Will it be a good proposal that the government will limit the vehicles in our country? As you said above, the main cause of air pollution is by means of vehicles in our country and to be specific, urban places like Manila.

Would an implemented violation with higher fines also be a good idea for smoke belchers to learn?

  6. Can you consider getting rid of jeepneys as a way to make the current state of air in the Philippines better.

How about electric jeepneys or other electric vehicles? We hear many good testimonies about it but why is still not prevalent here in our country? Why doesn't our government pass a law about replacing of fossil-fueled jeepneys with electric-driven jeepneys?can you consider this on your blog? I also hear that Makati City has a free ride on their electric jeepneys on a specific time? can you research more on this?

  8. I don't know with the others here, but I think it would be best for the sake of our Air System that there would be a regulation law that will inhibit the use of vehicles above 10 years. During those period, vehicles will more likely emit seriously harmful particulates that will cause severe damage to our air, affecting us people who most likely would inhale harmful gases from these automobiles.

    1. Actually, the government could just produce projects regarding regular maintenance of vehicles rather than phasing out vehicles. Most of our population lack knowledge of these environmental campaigns. The people should be informed by televised messages regarding this.

  9. DENR strengthens air quality monitoring by opening a new air monitoring station at EDSA. "The data collected from the stations will be used for air quality management, traffic and land-use purposes, determining exposure and advancing studies on health, vegetation or building materials, all in line with DENR’s Clean Air Program."

It was said in the news that once they have gathered sufficient data on where the air pollution is concentrated, they will launch programs to remedy the situation.

  11. All the rhetoric as usual. The pollution comes from varied sources including the burning of garbage and making of charcoal. The EPA sits in their offices warming their asses. Their buddies pollute the air and no one is accountable. You can smell the smoke in the Malls. Well it get better. hell no because they have absolutely no desire to change. No law no ambition...just yap!

  12. Para sa aming kabataan:
    1. Pagsulong ng pagkakaroon ng isang samahan ng estudyante pampubliko man o pribado kung saan ang adbokasya nito ay pangangalaga sa ating kalikasan;
    2. Paglahuk o pagiging bahagi ng kabataan sa bawat gawaing pangkalikasan pang pribado man o pampublikong proyekto
    3. Pagpapatalaga ng mga paaralan(publiko o pribado) ng mga iba't ibang pagsasanay sa kabataan upang mahubog sila sa pangangalaga ng ating kalikasan
    Salamat po.
